G1,
I don't think that it will work for AT&T right now, but it will be soon people selling on ebay unlocked G1 for GSM carriers.
As they did with the Iphone and later on software to unlock the G1 and so on Smiley, since Iphone has a contract with At&t, I believe that G1 will wait many months with Tmobile, G1 it will be Iphone's rival.

I thought T-Mobile's policy was that they would unlock any phone after 90 days. Is that not going to be the case for the G1? I have friends on AT&T who are inquiring as to whether I would be willing to burn one of my three upgrades for my family plan to buy a G1 for them. In my case though, pretty much everyone on my plan is planning to migrate to an Android phone on T-Mo.

ohmarni,
Well, to tell you the truth about the 90 days policy I don't know, but people will be selling it unlocked, the problem here is to check if really will work with other carriers, I read somewhere that the 3g will not work, is that confirmed? I don't think so, I believe that they are different 3g servers and not compatible each other. What I can tell you is to wait a little bit to get more information about this.

If you have new updated information, please post it here, your thread is very interesting and something that will concern to other carrier's users.

What I know is that more brandnames will be carrying the "Android" OS, motorola, samsung, etc, I am not sure about all of them, but next year soon will be carrying more OS with Android.

Do you think that they will be good phones? Who knows, but HTC is a very good phone.

The device will be sim-locked to the t-mobile network out of the gate as the developers stated it is "Best optimized for the t-mobile 3g network" however after some time passes I'm sure that the phone will be unlocked after a while. But there might be a glitch in the matrix when trying to use the data service on another carrier. I'm not sure how it would work out if it is unlocked. The iphone does work on t-mobile's network, but I know that if you try to unlock a sidekick for useage on another carrier, the data plan is worthless..

I have successfully unlocked an MDA and set it up to work on the AT&T network. I had to find an AT&T ROM to load. I'd be willing to bet that someone stuck in an AT&T plan will figure out how to make this phone work on that network and post it. It will probably not happen for a couple of weeks at least though. T-Mobile had a policy that they would not unlock Sidekicks from what I've read on the topic. It is likely they will have this policy for the G1 as well. After all, the plans are their bread and butter. If you're a diligent researcher, you will probably be able to find tutorials to unlock the G1 or at least find someone who will unlock it for a fee, which is usually somewhere around $60.

Yes there are a lot of savvy people out there who will find a will and a way. It might keep getting locked for a while though. I know Apple tried hard to lock down their Iphone before they just gave up, lol.

OK this is true for any tmobile 3g phone, even IF it can be unlocked you will not be able to use 3g services with other carriers. Tmobile 3g is a prorietary data service that isnt compatible with other networks 3g. It will default back to edge data speeds. I could take a guess and say it was due to all the unlocked non carrier specific phones on the network taking away revenue for the company , its alot lol, i see a ton of iphones and nokias on the network.

Does that mean that an unlocked 3G iPhone wouldn't be able to use T-Mo's 3G network?

YES My G1 works with my AT&T Service!  it was a cake walk.  i got a G1 from a friend who did not like it.  Then, I searched on google and found www.G1SIMUnlock.com and bought the code from them.  It was really easy to enter it coz the phone asks you when insert ATT sim.....  then enter the code..viola .I am not on AT&T network without waiting 90 days.

Have you guys ever come to the conclusion that there could be another G1 Forum?

I don't know if you guys know about

www.ipodtouchfans.com

One of the best and most popular forums for the iPod Touch. And it also has a part for the iPhone.

Well what you find there you won't find on any other forum.

Is there another G1 forum? or is this the one that will be the most popular??
