Well the T-Mobile G1 has recently been released into the wild and it’s only a matter of time before one gets hacked to be unlocked. How about right now?

[Note: This will unlock the phone in all ways but making actual phone calls, who needs to talk to people anyway when your IM apps will work?!]

This honestly has to be the simplest hack I’ve seen for unlocking a phone. Currently your ’supposed’ to wait until a two-year contract is up or wait for 90 days so that T-Mobile will unlock your phone for you. Impatient? We sure as hell are! This ‘fix’ also lends itself to the lazy personalities that run this site.

1) Insert friends activated T-mobile SIM into G1 along with battery
2) Power on and wait for setup screen
3) Go through setup process to link any Gmail account
4) Go to Settings > Wireless Controls > Wi-Fi Settings > Enable Wi-Fi
5) Connect to nearby Wi-Fi network if one is available
6) Optional: Stop the phone from syncing with Gmail account by going to Data Synchronization and unchecking Auto-sync, Gmail, Calendar, and Contacts
7) Once done, take out friends SIM card and insert unactivated SIM that came with G1

Pretty much fi you want to unlock the G1 all you need to do is borrow someone’s active T-Mobile SIM card and insert it while the G1 is going through it’s setup process. This will enable the free Wi-Fi and obviously while you won’t be able to call someone without a valid T-Mobile SIM card in the phone you will have full access to use all of it’s other features (see: play around online.)

Guru,
not bad for people who wants to use a phone for data (wifi), but i really don't see any advantage of it, how many people will use that?   you are using a phone to make phone calls and as extra user  google maps,   browser,  google search, etc  Hmm...... but thanks for the tip and tricks Smiley

=] np. There are many peoples and many needs. So maybe someone want (as I want) acces WiFi and simply can not because his provider suck (as in my case ;]) Tongue. It's a nice option for internet addicts with little sisters that always wants to get the computer and parents think anyway that it's unhealthy to sit so long in front of the ''silver screen''. With G1 you can always close the door of your room and surf without sister problem Tongue

as long as one of them has the g1 plan on it then you just follow the steps
if your talking about step seven then yes you should be able to put in any T-mobile sim after taking out the a activated g1 sim and it will see you have a sim in activated or not,,,, note you can use a none g1 account on the g1 through none wifi date , only through wifi
