G1 Google Android Tip To Save Battery   by Greyfoxzero

Well three things came up when i was experimenting with settings, first thing is screen brightness, i lowered all the way, i think is plenty bright at the lowest setting and as with any lcd the power consumption goes up with the brightness. Second theres a setting for gps satelite. I keep this off when not being used, the maps work great without it but i imagine i will use it at sometime down the road. The setting even says it, go to settings and its under security and location, its the Enable gps satellites setting, it says needs more battery and direct line of sight to the sky. Also this is more of a quirk for the last one, if your in a bad coverage area, i live out in the country so half the time i roam on att tower anyways lol, it will drain your battery a bit while it keeps trying to find signal. Thats really not the phones fault anyway but there is a missing feature i hope they unlock in the future, UMA calling, thats were you can call over wifi. Handy feature to have in no coverage areas but they have to tweak the software to be optimized for battery life. I can totally relate to the feeling of not getting the phone asap. Employees werent suppose to get the phones until launch but something changed higher up the chain of command. They were only meant for the front line, the Customer service reps and the sales reps, but Employees form other departments jumped in and got some even though they werent suppose to, hell i heard some reps got 2 by mistake when the limit was one. Either way it was still a small amount compared to the allotment for customers. The push for us to get some was due to the fact that its going to be pretty silly when none of the employees know anything about the device lol, we had training on it but i gotta say it was more of a sales pitch tweaked for the reps. I knew more about the device than the trainer did. Plus theres buzz about a patch coming at launch to make the phone better. Today i checked the market and most apps were removed? I think since some were still a little unstable and if this patch is real i imagine they may have to be reworked. Overall i think by launch your going to get a phone thats more ready for primetime. Whats kind of funny about this though is that I had a chance to test out the new web2go service, surprised there isnt more buzz for this, phones like the g1 or the iphone have revolutionized the industry so much that youtube browsing is coming to any handset, yes any handset on the network and very decent real web browsing, its completely replacing tzones and its suppose to launch in November. I tried it on a sony ericson tm506, great flip phone but no powerhouse by any means, i was able to pull up full websites much like opera mini or the google browser does and it could stream youtube right to the handset and the performance was very optimized. i was really impressed considering this runs on pretty much any handset and to see highend features get completely opened to all users so quickly is a pretty big leap. Of course it wont feel best on anything other than a phone like the G1.

First, I want to say I love my G1. That said, battery life has to be my only real complaint. Granted, I'm a heavy user. I finally have a phone that does darn near everything I want it to, but I'm having to plug it in all the time. I really hope someone comes out with a super efficient battery for this phone. This is really the only thing that takes away from my awesome experience. Tough to get all the enjoyment I want when I'm always worried about battery life and I'm always looking for a place to get my charge on.

Yeah, no problem. I've already taken quite a few of the programs for a test run. Must have Locale for sure. Since you're in real estate, you might want to check out the Homes app for ideas. I think everyone should have PicSay. I was able to take low light pictures I took with the phone's camera and make the useable as caller ID photos with brightness and contrast adjustments in PicSay.

I am considering buying more batteries. However, that means I will have to turn off my phone and switch out the battery. Better than a dead battery, but still a pain. You see where I'm coming from. I will likely do that until I can get an extended battery.

Oh, I have a charger next to my bed, next to my recliner, on my desk at work, in the car. I haven't set up my YouMail yet. Gonna get to it eventually.

Great tip. Much appreciated. I'll use that one when I know I won't be able to plug my phone in for a while.

Woo hoo! Not sure if this is true, but a friend told me he talked to support and they told him there is a planned OTA update to fix battery life issues after Thanksgiving. Anyone else hear about this?

ohmarni,
hope that it will not make the phone slower, because  I am thinking that they can do two things to solve the problem,
1) Make the system to use less cpu, but it will make the phone slower, so you can save battery.   it is the same as the notebooks,   if you disconnect the power supply you can tell the system that use less resources and your battery life will be extended.
2) OR Kill or suspend processes that really not be to turned active all the time.

Hope that it will be the second option, if not we will be fried with a slower phone.

From what I heard, there is a continuous loop issue with email and calendar that they are fixing, too. I think there are issues that have come to light since the launch. Now...this is the service I expect from Google. People can say what they want, but Google and T-Mo are very responsive to their customers.
