Do you say 'England' or 'English' when you actually mean 'Britain' or 'British'?

I dont know... Its how I was brought up I guess. It says England on a map though some maps say Britain and some just have it under the UK. Its confusing.... Im Irish so that may have something to do with it.

I guess I can understand. I am mostly nothern black Irish and some Scottish. My last name is Scottish. But my family would never refer to themselves as British when living there.
Actually now that I think about it I never hear anyone say British or Britain anymore.

What if you're talking about which country they're from? If you're referring to a Brit would you just say 'England'?

No I would say English, Scottish, Irish, Welsh, or Cornish depending on where there from. Though if I was not sure which they were from I may say British.... Like Im American but people dont call me a North American. Also Hawaii is part of America but most people from Hawaii who are native to the islands would refer to themelves as Hawaiian first. When I travel around and people ask where I am from I dont say USA or Illinois, I say im a Chicagoan. I guess its all how you look at it.
