New G1 - 1st Smartphone

Hello everyone! I've been with T-Mobile for 4 years and started out with an unlocked Motorola L6 (very pretty, efficient phone) back in 2005. I lost it and just got a quickie replacement with the Motorola W490 -- which was ok; but very boring. Well it came time for an upgrade and I wanted something with "bells & whistles" -- but not a Blackberry (I didn't want to be tempted to use the phone for work) or a Sidekick (my sister has...but I am not a texter). I use Google software (like Gmail, Calendar, Docs, etc.) a lot, so I went with the G1.

I looked at the MyTouch, but I didn't like how it worked with my nails. I felt more comfortable with the button keyboard; but I wish the G1 looked as slick as the MyTouch. I was very pleasantly surprised to see that Android is open-source. I used to be a big fan of Linux until the development community sort of fizzled out for it. I don't like the proprietary environment of Apple and Windows being in every aspect of our lives (as much as I like Apple computers; iTunes frustrates me to no end).

So anyway I am still getting used to having a cell phone that can do more than just dial a number. I loved how I was able to IM with my boyfriend yesterday while getting a pedicure. Welcome to the year 2009 I guess!
