HOW DO YOU KNOW IF THERE ARE OPEN SOFTWARES RUNNING IN THE BACKGROUND. MY BATTERY LIFE ISNT THAT GREAT, AND I READ SOMEWHERE ON THIS FORUM THAT IT MAY BE BECAUSE OF SOFTWARES RUNNING ALL THE TIME WHEN THEY ARE NOT NEEDED.

HOW DO YOU SWITCH THEM OFF??

Gaffa, As far as I know there is not way to switch it off for now,  just I have found that   you can close  browser windows that you have opened pressing Menu key when you are in the browser.

huh? the menu key?? i jus tried that it gave me all the options on the bottom of the screen. it
did not give me an option to quit browser? do u mean the home key. but even when i press that,it only takes me back to the home screen, i still dont know whether or not the browser is still running.

thats how i exit all my applications, by pressing the home key.

when i go back onto my browser, the last page i visited appears! is this normal or im i not exiting the programme. cos im assuming everytime i start the browser the homepage should appear.

do u kinda understand what im sayin?

I understand what you are saying
1) Run your browser
2) Press Menu Key
3) Press Window
4) All open windows that you have there you can see them and you can close each one, one by one  pressing the  X

that's it.

If you hold down the home key you'll see a task switcher type menu with whatever apps you have running in the background.

What Geo wrote, it's true ,   and I have not closed the one that you said, just always is like two windows open,  one blank and the other with something too.

CORRECTION:

When you long press the ho,me key, it brings up the 6 most recent apps used, that does not mean that they are running.

Poker,

1000000000000% positive. I am looking for the link. I double checked it by opening apps that dont need to be "running" and then long press home key and they all came up.

poker is correct the only apps that will stay running are apps that depend on sync or downloaded apps that run in the background. Multitasking is one thing Android does really well. Apps can run in the background, receiving data and continuing to "exist," even though you don't see them. The OS handles memory management for you invisibly, giving processes a lower CPU priority and taking away their RAM when other programs need it. For now, examples are simple, like opening a browser, then a bunch of other apps, then returning to the browser. You can use four or five apps before before the browser has to re-fetch data on the web page. Presumably, programmers will soon make more impressive use of the background processing power. but when you do back out of the app it does lay dormant or goes to sleep.
