How to when " I can't connect my g1 through USB or I/O error device

Fellows,

I decided to do this, because I have seen that many people are having trouble with these issues, when they CAN'T transfer mp3 files from a PC computer to your SD micro memory card, ringtones or files at all.

1) Make sure that your SD Micro memory card is inserted properly in your phone,  if your phone does not read your SD Micro memory card, your computer won’t too, make sure that your G1 Google Phone reads properly your SD Micro memory card.

2) Make sure that your memory card is in USB mode.
a) Go to settings
b) Select SD storage
c) make sure that your USB drive is with a green checkmark.

3) If you are with Windows XP, I can imagine that for Windows vista is very similar or the same procedure, Plug IN the USB cord into your phone and then plug it into your computer’s USB connector, wait until it should pop up something in the task bar that new hardware found or that it was recognized your android phone.    You’ll see a pop up with some notifications such as:
new hardware found disk drive & removable storage.

4) When you plug your USB cable from you G1 into your PC you should receive a USB symbol in the upper left hand corner of your G1’s display. Tap and drag that down and you should see an option to mount the drive. Once you tap on that option you should be able to use the drive as any other removable disk. Once you disconnect the cable you will once again be un-mounted and in "normal" mode.
5) It should work like a USB drive,  Go to my computer and select the removable and you can read or copy and paste files  like  mp3 ringtones or photos (jpgs, etc)

If this does not work while your phone is still connected then:
1) Press Menu, Select settings
2) Go to and Select SD card and phone Storage
3) go to and Select unmount /eject SD card
4) Then disconnect your usb cable for 30 seconds or less until you hear the disconnection.
5) Then follow the steps from 3

If still does not work, I have read that only works with USB 2.0 ports, I don’t have any old PC to verify this, but if you are experiencing problems, please make sure that you are working on a PC that has 2.0 USB port now, if your PC is very old, maybe that’s why, also try also on different computers, check what OS you are having problems where it's XP or Vista,

also post your experiences, questions and solutions here, so other people can learn from your problems.

Some other people say this:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* “I was having the same problem as well as a friend of mine... the problem for both was the cable itself.  Try plugging it into the phone about 80% of the way.  Heh thats what worked for both of us... and what also worked was my old MDA (or any mini usb) cable”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* “That "plugging it into the phone about 80% of the way" is how it worked for me.  Weird.  But thanks for the tip! “
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“I've been having the same issue with the I/O Error and USB connectivity. PC detected it fine, installed properly, was able to mount the device on the G1 with the pulldown menu at the top (manual instructions were incorrect, had to find that out on my own). Shows properly on the PC, even opens up and displays the files, can even play the audio files from it on the PC. CAN NOT for the life of me get files on it.
-------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“I tried the 80%-plugged-in method and got it to work once, but the file copied produced and error on the PC, then was corrupted when I tried to open it on the G1.”

 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“This was all done on the front USB ports on the PC, which I'm not entirely sure they are USB 2.0. I didnt' have a chance to test on the onboard USB ports at the back, as I only have 2 on my PC and will have to swap some devices around. I'll reply again if I discover anything with this.”

As it is now, I'm pointing my finger at the cable that was provided...”
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“If you have connected your usb to the phone and computer but unable to access the drive from the computer then do the following:
-Press the "home" button on your phone, press "menu" then "notifications."
-Under notifications, click the USB option and click "mount"

Apparently, you need to mount in order to use transfer files from your computer to phone.

Not so bad but unmount click would be great”

i was glad to see that others were having this problem as well & that there might be a resolution. i treid the suggestions here as well as a ton of other things including 3 other mini usb cables that still left the "e:/ is not accessable due to an i/o device error"....
rayosx, where did you get the quotes where other people were making suggestions on this error? im curious to hear more from others that have put an end to this error.
the suggestion i have is to use a card reader. i went & purchased one fairly cheap at my lcal walmart & use that to tranfer files on/off my sd card. not as convenient as directly connecting the g1 to the pc but is all i have for a working option....

Once you get your card properly mounted how to you manage your files? Shouldnt there be instructions somewhere of what folders to create and what files you need in certain places? I need some file management theory for the SD card.

I do not have 3G in my area so I may need to input the apps from the SD card - where do I figure this out from?

Hi All !

I have a somewhat different problem;

I can access my SD on myG1  properly;  when I connect the USB connector I get a notification from G! and XP  that I am connected but when I go on my computer to access the new drive ( D in this case) I get "please insert disk" notice.  The strange thing is that for a couiple of days I was able to access the SD card on my computer  then this problem started

I tried to de-install and reinstall the device on XP and still get the same thing.  I was succesful in accessing my SD card via a card reader.

Update:

Well, I resolved my problem...

When you connect the USB port to the G1 you get a notification on the G1 that USB is active ....  then you  press on the notification and select to mount the device.... and Voila !

UNIX or LINUX based device need to be mounted to be accessed....

- G1 will rock more with Flash Player 10 soon !

I got the same problem i called t mobile they made me reset my phone  Embarrassed

Nothing they told me worked...but i was told that is a error from HTC side and you have to call HTC
since its not reading the memory card

Called HTC and was told is because the phone is not reading all types off format memory cards...If they fix your issue then good luck other wise they are sending out free memory card to users with this issue because they said is there fault lol

Great news now am waiting on my free memory card, but what i dont understand is that i bought a 4 gigs memory card will HTC give me a 4 gigs or back to a 1 gigs?

What do you guys think?

Thank you agent.orange.blossom!

You are exactly right. After you connet to the computer via the USB you will notice a small USB icon at the top of the telephone screen. Open the screen like you are viewing a message and choose mount the card and it works!

Thanks again!

I cannot get my phone to connect thru a USB 1.0 port.  It must be USB 2.0.  I have tested on several machines.

USB 1.0 not working for me either.  I mounted and I can see the SD card folder on the computer, just can't transfer anything to it without getting the "I/O error."

Any fixes for this aside from installing a USB 2.0?  I really don't feel like taking the computer apart to install a 2.0.
