How to quit stand-by apps running?

Is there a way to End apps that are on stand-by or running idle in the background?

no because this is not windows mobile the android os shuts down the apps as soon as you back out of them except for apps that need to run all the time like some off the apps in the market place but when you download it it will tell you what access it needs if it says background process and your worried about battery life then stay away from the app. other than that the android os is very efficient my friend

when you press and hold the home button the box that appear with apps icons in it are not actually running in the background, they are recent apps that u have used.

When you long press hold, it shows the apps that were recently used, it doesnt mean that they are running.
