how to install system update

i got a msg to my g1 saying:

"a system update is available while your phone is updating, you canu make emergency calls. your phone will restart during update".

when i clicked "update now" it started to update untill a triangle with a exclamation mark in it shown on the screen. and it stayed that way for more than an hour untill i remove the bettary.

can u please tell me how to install it? should i turned on the wi-fi or somthing?
