Unlock Benefits?

Let me ask what may get a simple answer that I somehow am not getting:

As a T-Mobile customer, what benefit would someone get by unlocking their G1, assuming they never intend to travel internationally with it?

In case something happens to google code, and just cause I'm anal like that, thought I'd host roms myself.

unless you going to use it on another gsm provider or to sell it then there are no benifits
