I just got my phone and boy am I FRUSTRATED.  I turned it on and got to the part where it tells me to create or login to gmail.  I already have an account, so I tried logging in.  No luck.  Came up with "There is a problem communicating with the Google servers" and below that was "This could be a temporary problem or you SIM card may not be provisioned for data services.  If it continues, call customer care."  I tried to create a new account, still came up with the same thing.  My SIM card is from my old phone and have been receiving all kinds of data/internet/email/etc...  and why the heck is it sooooo difficult to get the back cover off!  Geeez!!!

MD,
I had the very same problem with mine when it came in.  After messing with every forum on the net and trying all the mentioned options, i finally went to the tmobile store in my town.  i was waiting in the line for the next tmobile rep. and just for the hell of it i powered up my g1.  It instantly connected to the google servers.
Turns out, my edge connection near my apartment wasn't very good.  it couldn't connect there but while at the tmobile store, where the signals are maxed, that fixed my issues with the initial set up problem. So, before you get too frustrated take your phone to a known tmobile hotspot or transmitter (normally in every store) where the edge signal/3g is strong and I bet it will solve your problems.  I hope this helps, if not then you might need a new sim card.

Thanks for everyone's help.  The phone I had before getting the G1 was a Blackberry.  I contacted t-mobile, who told me I had to switch my Provisions from Blackberry to the G1 (didn't know that).  Then was told that it may take anywhere between 10 minutes to 2 hours.  Well after 2 hours, I couldn't wait anymore and went the t-mobile at the mall.  Once there, I attempted to go through the steps again and what do you know... it worked.  Thanks again. Now I'm playing with it to see what I can do with all the features.

Hey I had the same problem when I got mine. I tried for hours but just couldn't get past the login. I phone customer support and they said it would take 24-72 hours. But I didn't want to wait. Anyway after 3 phone calls to customer support I was able to login. I don't know what the problem was but you should give them a ring and see what's going on.

its the provisioning of the data plan it can be instant or take 24 to 72 hours you cant use the g1 unless the data plan is working to first sign in to google when you first get your phone. so theres nothing wrong with the phone or tmobile. so be pashient it will work. same thing happens on the iphone when you first get it remember patience is a virtue.

I cannot get past the first screen on my G1, either.  I've made multiple multiple calls to the TMo customer service.  Every time they tell me that they'll open a help desk ticket for me, and I'll have a solution within 72 hours.  Every time, there's no resolution.  I've now had my phone for 10 days, and it still isn't working.  Is any one else running into this problem?  I've been so geeked about this phone since I first read about it's pending release a year ago.  And this is just so disheartening, to have the phone, and not be able to use it.  I want to scream!  Any help would be appreciated.

Make sure that you have an active G1 data plan. It's important that it's the G1 plan and not the Blackberry or Sidekick plans otherwise it won't work. You also need to make sure that you have an active data signal, either EDGE or 3G otherwise you don't have any data communication even if you do have the correct plan. Otherwise it sounds like it might be something wrong with you phone? Sorry I'm not more help.

Turns out it's TMo's glitch, and not a problem on my part.  They can't change my data services/text message plan from what I currently have to what I need for the G1.  Something about a problem in the system preventing this.  The change won't be effective until my new billing cycle starts.  10 days from now.  I'm super annoyed.  And I'm heavily contemplating returning the phone before the 14 days is up.  I can't even use it to tell if I'll like it.  This is so irritating.  Thanks for the help.
