WHY I DONT WANT A G1:
1.HEARD DA BATTERY LIFE SUX, I SEE ALMOST EVERYBODY COMPLAININ BOUT IT IN THIS FORUM..IM A MODERATE TEXTER N MODERATE INTERNET USER SO HOPEFULLY IT DOESNT DRAIN FAST
2.AIM IS NOT AS GOOD AS IT SHOULD B. IM HEARING THIS MOSTLY FROM FORMER SK USERS SO I KINDA UNDERSTAND..IM NOT A CRAZII AIM USER EITHA..JUS PUT UP AWAYS N HIT PPL UP WEN I FEEL LYK IT

Well, I've never owned or even used the sidekick, and seeing as how the my touch hasn't been released yet( and at this point in time hasn't been rooted by those who have had a chance to mess with it) can't help you much there.  I can, however say that the g1 is the best phone I have ever owned.

In response to your reasons that you don't want a g1, here are my personal experiences:

1. Battery life- the battery does drain quick compared to non smart phones. If you calibrate your battery ( as mentioned in these forums) you can still get a good lifespan out of a charge. On a full charge my phone will last from 11am to 3-4 am with heavy internet use. I do nearly all my posting on this forum(including this post) via g1. I spend roughly 6 hours a day on the net unplugged from the charger.

2. AIM- tbh..I have no clue about this because I don't use aim at all. Not even on my pc so perhaps someone else can get with you about that.

3. Force closes and "slowness"-  force closes happen sometimes. Its not like its a non stop issue unless its a particular problem with a buggy app. Even when force closes happen, its not like your phone shuts off or something. It simply closes the app or feature and you can immediatly re open it.  For me force closes don't happen much, and when they do I don't get particularly bothered by them
   - when people refer to slowness of their phones, more times than not they are meaning the phone reacts slower than normal.  That doesn't at all mean that the phone isn't reacting fast, just means not as fast as it could/should.  If you don't root, you will only realy encounter slowness due to low internal memory, or perhaps too many apps running in the background   If you do root and you encounter slowness it could be related to the rom installed , in which case you could flash a different version, or whole new rom all together to remedy your problems.

All in all, for me at least, the g1 has been great. Rooting is simple and gratifying, the apps are great and most are free, the actual phone functions work well, the keyboard feels great, and the screen is bright, clear, and resposive.  There isn't another phone on the market I would replace my g1 with.

Hope this helps you in your decision even though I was unable to make direct comparisons of your other options.

I don't think you will be disappointed.  There may be things that a g1 won't do as well as a sidekick, but one thing is for sure.  There are countless thing you can/will be able to do on your g1 that a sidekick owner could only read about.

When you get your new device, let me know what you think.  Also, what color were you thinking about getting?

The keyboard on the black g1 is black still. I bought the bronze originaly and my wife bought black.  I had an issue with my bronze one and returned it and grabbed the white one. I love the white one.  For some reason it lokks classier to me.  The only issue I had with the white and bronze ones are the backlight for the keyboard. Since the keys are silver in mid range lighting its hella hard to see the letters on the keys without holding the phone at weird angles.  Easy fix if rooted tho.  There is an app for root users that gives you the ability to turn the backlight for the keyboard on and off with the tap of a widget on the desktop.  I just turn it off during the day, and back on when I'm in a dark area.

That's what I did. Waited about 2 weeks before I rooted.  As far as which is the best rom.....its about personal preference.  I havnt tried many, infact only two.  First had JF1.51crb43. It was alright, since this was my priginal modded rom I had no idea what I was missing out on.  Now I have cyanogen 3.6.5 and boy oh boy is it better imho.

Its all up to the user.

Bajan, I also did the same thing...kinda toyed with the idea, read, got to get information prior to rooting my G1. The fact is that I too now now Cyanogen 3.6.5, and it seems even faster than it was out of the box. I can assure you, you will be quite happy with the end product, though it CAN BE time consuming.

Yeah takes a bit to digest all the info.  I don't claim to know a ton about root.  But its not such an overwhelming task that you can't learn as you go.   Just be sure you have your ducks in a row prior to rooting, and all should go well.

What I meant about being faster, is that transitions from apps, or pages within apps etc, SEEMS quicker, or at least, they load/change in rapid almost imperceptible manner. That's just my thoughts. What I can say though, is that Cyanogen's build is very fast and stable. I haven't had any problem since I uninstalled the additional themes. So that's what I meant.
