From what I heard it does work but you need the data connection for the initial setup or if you reset the phone.

The phone can work without the data plan, the question is will Tmo let you use the phone for just the voice by itself? I wouldn't want to use any phone that requires heavy data for just the voice feature though

Moon,
But at first all T-mobile people were saying that you need to have the data plan 24.99 or 34.99, so the phone can work properly,  it does not have anything to be with the phone the data plan, so if you want to use applications that you use internet, sure that you need the data plan or if you want to check emails, etc,   unless you just use  WIFI.

The problem here is when you set your phone to default,   it asks  for   login / password  from your gmail account, right?    I know that pressing   menu it will pop up some options, is there anyway that we can connect thorugh WIFI from there?  if so,  then for nothing we don't need the data plan for sure  or the other option is    to ask the sim of someone (friend or family) just to bypass that and then use your own sim without data plan Smiley

Any clue about this?

i dont know the last time i went to someones house that didn't have wifi, i live in a town where everyone uses wifi, most businesses offer free wifi, and the university has wifi too.  for me there is no need for the data plan except for text messages.

from what im hearing Tmobile is doing a promotion for a month where all G1 users will have access to data and texts for four weeks starting October 22 (launch date) Originally i heard it would be through november 10 but that has passed and im still texting on my plan without data, and it is showing up online on the tmobile site just like it did before i had the G1.  I was originally told that text messages were sent differently on the G1 and thus the need for the data.  I have not yet heard anything that is different but judging by my usage shown on Tmobile, i dont think it is required.  I guess we will know more next week or maybe after this billing cycle.
