Guys,

I'm SERIOUSLY tempted to buy this phone off the shelf, I think it's THE best phone I've seen for a long time and is released here in the UK around 3rd July.

I'm presuming as it runs on android it should be a relatively similair process to root like the G1?

I'm surprised I can find hardly any threads on HTC's latest flagship..?

I would probably leave this all on one thread.

But, this could get the dreaded un-hackable SPL like the MyTouch 3G.

There's no such thing as un-hackable. If you are talking about haykuro's blog, it states until further notice. Everything is hackable if you have a team of devs dedicated to it. IE PSP 3000. It was unhackable for maybe 3 years and it became hackable several weeks ago. No one really cared to persue that hard because the original lines were much easier and between the 1000 and 3000, the only difference really is the screen and cpu to run the screen. If the MyTouch becomes more popular than the G1 very quickly, it will be a matter of weeks or months before it is rooted. I see the hero being able to do so before the mytouch if they use different SPL just because it is a better speced phone. If you're here in the US, wait for the Samsung i7500 which will launch Fall of this year in the US. It has the same specs as Hero but with 8 gigs of storage. Either way, both phones are very good and Samsung is working hardcore on their open source dev team.

ringojcp,
you wrote the magic word "popular" all stuff that becomes very popular or with a lot of demand, developers, coders, etc get hacks, cracks, etc, etc Smiley    I have seen that Smiley

exactly, myself and androidcee both came from the Samsung behold/memoir forums and although I am part of the samsung innovator program, we will hardly see anything for the touchwiz UI...it's just not worth it for users like us who wants MORE than just a phone with capabilities. I don't know about you guys, but my phone had always been my PA. I own two memoirs and they were good at it after some adjustments however, the g1 is just more user friendly...The touchwiz may be seeing some new widgets and more functional java programs. however, samsung has ramped up there open source department in ready for the android launch on their phones and touchwiz may be completely left behind or used on mid range priced phones. We may see one or two minor UI updates for the less popular stuff, but believe me, we will not have the hackers to create CFW for them.

Ringojcp,
true, also Jeno told me something true as well, on XDA the most popular hardware is the HTC, so if we have another HTC phone we will see more people interested to break it, since they have already knowledge on this hardware and I believe that coders like it Smiley

I see no problem with future HTC's being open as it is now. Its initial launch of android with the G1 took it to another level. I do see that HTC will be having a run for their money as Samsung is working very hard to dev their products. I highly doubt we will be needing hackers for Samsung products beause they are going to be doing it for us. Samsung has always been a leader in electronics but their cell phones have always fallen behind and I think this is their chance to step up their game. It will be an interesting race to see.

I first refused to buy a G1 because of its ugliness but because of Android, I have overlooked that fact.

It is great to see how technology develops in the hands of their users rather than their original devs.

the only problem with the samsung phones is them bieng locked down from samsung making it that much harder to hack htc on the other hand makes pretty much straight foward when it comes to hacking by the way htc is the largest manufacture of smartphones in the world

I like HTC in my opinion, I just have had  the  T-mobile HTC MDA with windows mobile 5.0 when it came available and so far, I liked the phone, but only problem is that on that time that phone was a brick LOL, heavier and thick, but besides that, I liked the  qwerty keyboard and it worked fine for my needs on that time,  now? this g1 works wonders for what I use the phone. Smiley

I am just missing my real estate search app from the IDX database in Metrolist, it will be awesome to access a search database for realtors, not just for the public,  I can use the one that I have for prospects or clients, but   it is directly from the web, it's not an app.

I like the G1. I've always stayed away from HTC because they were all BRICKS and I didn't wanted to carry something that wouldnt fit in my pocket. The i7500 does lose to the hero though just because of UI. Really, if Hero become operable on my G1, I wouldn't have a reason to upgrade other than a better camera.

Jeno,
Yes, I agree, but that is only if you have for now  the jf adp, us, or other rom that is not the Dudes, the dudes has a better camera in my opinion.
Unless the snap photo pro has changed their code for now
